E-mail from Nadi, Fiji Sorry it has taken me so
long
to write. It is amazing how fast the days go buy and how few computers
with an internet connection there are in the jungle. I will start from
the beginning of the trip and fill you all in on what I've been up to
for the last few weeks. My flight arrived in Papeete at 1:30 a.m.. I
slept on the stone floor of the airport until Air Tahiti opened at 5:30
a.m.. I got an early flight to Bora Bora where I spent the majority
of my time while in French Polynesia. The hostel was across the road
from the beach and I shared a room with six other people from all over
the world. I rented a rusty bike for $10 and rode the 17 mile road which
goes around the island. As soon as you get through the town which is
about 1.5 miles long, houses and people are almost non-existent. The
Americans built the road and the airport during W.W.II because they
were storing equipment there after Pearl Harbor was bombed. I am sure
if they had not done it, the road still would not go around the entire
island. The people there
spoke French and a couple of other local languages, few spoke English.
The majority of the tourist were French and Italian. I took a tour were
they bring you out to a reef and you feed sharks and sting ray. You
hold on to a line with snorkel gear on and they chum the water. The
sharks and sting ray arrived shortly after and they give you fish which
the sharks will take from your hand. Most of the reef sharks were about
3 feet long but a few had to be at least 6 feet. I am glad I did this
early as the next time I went snorkeling on my own I saw a 5 foot shark
which past buy me twice while I was out. I would surly have panicked
if I had not done the tour first. The sting ray swim up your leg and
there wings kind of hug you and you push the food right in there mouths.
The fish and coral in Tahiti was not as spectacular as you would think
but the water is several amazing colors of blue. The day time temperature
is perfect for laying on the beach and swimming. Bora Boralooks exactly
like what you would imagine pardise to look like. I have underwater
pictures of the sharks, sting ray, and an eel I came across snorkeling.
